The Higher Education System in Armenia

The Armenian higher education system is overseen by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, which establishes policies for education and science in the country. Higher education institutions (HEIs) in Armenia are divided into state and private institutions, with the two-level educational system (Bachelor-Master) introduced in 2007.

Types of higher education institutions in Armenia

Armenia has several types of higher education institutions, each offering distinct programs:

  1. Hamalsaran: universities providing multidisciplinary and specialized academic programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  2. Institut: institutions offering specialized higher education and training, usually focused on specific scientific or professional fields.
  3. Conservatoria: conservatories offering programs in the arts, particularly music and performing arts.
  4. Academia: institutions offering specialized education and training, often with a focus on certain professions or academic fields.

Access to higher education in Armenia

In Armenia, students access higher education after completing at least 12 years of schooling. Students finish primary school (4 years), junior school (5 years), and senior secondary school (3 years), obtaining the Mijnakarg Yndhanur Krtoutian Attestat (Certificate of Secondary Education). Students who complete vocational education (3 years) are also eligible for higher education, though they must pass an entrance exam. Admission requirements may also include medical certificates for foreign students.

Languages of instruction in Armenia

The primary languages of instruction in Armenian higher education institutions are Armenian and Russian. Some programs may also be offered in other languages depending on the institution and field of study.

Stages of higher education in Armenia

  1. University level first stage: the Bachelor's degree is awarded after four years of study, with medical programs taking a minimum of 5 years. The Medical Doctor degree is awarded after a minimum of 5 years of study, depending on the specialization.
  2. University level second stage: the Master's degree is awarded after two years of study following the Bachelor's degree. There are integrated Master's programs in medicine and stomatology lasting 5 to 6 years.
  3. University level third stage: postgraduate education leads to a Candidate of Science (PhD) degree after 3 years of research study following the Master's degree. Candidates must defend a thesis to obtain this degree.
