The Higher Education System in Angola

Since 2017, higher education in Angola has been under the responsibility of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (Ministério do Ensino Superior, Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação, MESCTI). The system is composed of public, public-private, and private institutions, offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses with both academic and professional tracks.

Types of higher education institutions in Angola

In Angola, higher education institutions are classified into the following types:

  1. Universities (Universidade): institutions that provide undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, including research-oriented programs.
  2. Academies (Academia): institutions that offer specialized higher education and postgraduate training, typically requiring a doctorate degree for faculty.

  2. Second stage: pós-Graduação programs include two categories:
    • Pós-graduação académica: leads to the Mestrado, awarded after two to three years of study following the Licenciatura.
    • Pós-graduação profissional: includes Especialização, a professional postgraduate qualification of various durations.
  3. Third stage: doutoramento is a doctoral degree conferred after four to five years of study and the completion of a thesis following the Mestrado.
