The Higher Education System in Burundi

The higher education system in Burundi is overseen by the Ministère de l'Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche Scientifique (MESRS) and is guided by laws such as Law N. 1/22 (2011), which regulates the higher education system.

In Burundi, there are two main types of higher education institutions:

1. Université: these are multidisciplinary institutions offering academic programs and degrees at various levels.
2. Institut: higher institutes offering specialized training and education in specific fields.

Admission to higher education in Burundi requires the Diplôme d'Etat, which is awarded at the end of secondary school. This diploma is necessary for university entry, and foreign students must demonstrate proficiency in French.

The primary language of instruction in Burundian higher education institutions is French.

1. First stage: the first stage of university education lasts for three years and leads to the Bachelier degree.
2. Second stage: the second stage lasts for two years beyond the Bachelier degree and results in the Mastère (or Maîtrise).
3. Third stage: the third stage, typically lasting three years, leads to the Doctorat.
