Founded in 1989, the University of Cyprus is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the small city of Nicosia (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants). Officially recognized by the Cyprus Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, University of Cyprus (UCY) is a medium sized (uniRank enrollment range: 7,000-7,999 students) coeducational Cypriot higher education institution. University of Cyprus (UCY) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor's degrees, master's degrees and doctorate degrees in several areas of study. Recently, it has relocated to its new state-of-the-art building, named the "Stelios Ioannou Learning Resource Centre" an architectural masterpiece designed by the renowned architect Jean Nouvel. The library boasts an extensive collection, including over 600,000 volumes of monographs and periodicals, granting access to 540,000 e-books, 30,000 electronic journal titles, and 188 databases. Moreover, it offers a generous study space, providing 952 study areas, 31 group study rooms, and a 24/7 Reading Area with 72 spaces.
The library offers a wide range of services for students and visitors, enhancing their experience and research capabilities:

  • Self-Service Check-Out/Return: The library facilitates a 24/7 self-service check-out and return system for books, providing convenience to users at any time.
  • VPN Connection: Users can utilize a VPN connection to access subscription-based content from outside the University network, ensuring access to valuable resources from remote locations.
  • Research Tools: The library equips users with essential research tools, including citation management tools like RefWorks and online plagiarism checkers (Turnitin), fostering academic integrity and efficient citation management.
  • Inter-Library Loan: Through this service, the library acquires online information sources not available in its collections and delivers them via email to users while strictly adhering to copyright laws.
  • Services for Visually Impaired Users: Specialized services are available for visually impaired students, including the conversion of printed material to digital form for easier access and use in teaching.
  • Photo-Reproduction and Digitization: The library offers photo-reproduction and digitization services to academic staff, converting analog materials into digital formats for teaching and research purposes.
  • Information Literacy Seminars: The library conducts information literacy seminars, covering various topics like the library catalog, online information services, search techniques, bibliographic management tools, and plagiarism. These seminars are conducted both in-person and online through the Microsoft Teams platform.
  • Personal Library Account Management: Users have access to their personal library accounts, enabling them to view checked-out books, due dates, fines, and renew the loan period.
  • Live Chat and Individual Meetings: The library provides live online chat support and individual meetings with staff to offer customized information support based on individual needs, whether in-person or online.

 

The UCY Library has received prestigious recognition in the form of the "Recognized for Excellence – 3 stars" certification from the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM). Additionally, it actively participates in global networks and associations such as EU programs like OpenAIREAdvance and OpenAIRE2020, the National Open Access Desk, the European Documentation Center, IFLA, LIBER, and the Cyprus Library Consortium, enhancing its engagement with the academic and research community at both national and international levels.
