American Bar Association, Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar

Overview

Founded in 1893 and officially recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE), the Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar is a national specialized accrediting organization focusing on the accreditation throughout the United States of programs in legal education that lead to the first professional degree in law, including those offered via distance education, as well as freestanding law schools offering such programs. It was established by the American Bar Association in 1921 to promote a high-quality legal education and to establish standards for legal education. The Council's mission is to ensure that law schools provide high-quality legal education that meets national standards and that graduates of ABA-accredited law schools are well-prepared to enter the legal profession. The Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions sets standards for legal education and evaluates law schools against those standards. The Council accredits law schools that meet its standards for educational quality, institutional effectiveness and student achievement. ABA accreditation is voluntary but is often a requirement for admission to the bar and for practice in certain areas of law. In addition to accreditation, the Council provides support and resources to its accredited law schools, including access to educational research and best practices, professional development opportunities for faculty and staff and advocacy on behalf of legal education. The Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions also works to promote diversity and inclusion in legal education and the legal profession.
