American Board of Funeral Service Education, Committee on Accreditation

American Board of Funeral Service Education, Committee on Accreditation

Overview

Founded in 1962 and officially recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE), the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE), Committee on Accreditation is the specialized accrediting agency mandated to accredit the institutions or programs of funeral service education in the United States. The ABFSE Committee on Accreditation's mission is to ensure that funeral service education programs provide high-quality education and training to students preparing for careers in the funeral service profession. The Committee sets standards for educational quality and institutional effectiveness and evaluates programs against those standards. The ABFSE Committee on Accreditation accredits associate's and bachelor's degree programs in funeral service education, as well as mortuary science programs offered by certain institutions. ABFSE accreditation is voluntary, but is often a requirement for licensure and credentialing in the funeral service profession. In addition to accreditation, the ABFSE Committee on Accreditation also provides support and resources to its accredited programs, including access to educational research and best practices, professional development opportunities for faculty and staff and advocacy on behalf of funeral service education. The Committee also works to promote diversity and inclusion in funeral service education and the funeral service profession.
