Established in 1917 and officially recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE), the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) is an independent regional accreditation agency for higher education institutions in 7 states in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. NWCCU geo focus is regional and confined within the United States. NWCCU is based in Redmond, Washington. The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities is one of the 6 recognized regional accrediting organizations officially mandated to accredit degree-granting higher education institutions in the United States. According to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities recognized scope of accreditation embraces postsecondary degree-granting educational institutions and the accreditation of programs offered via distance education within these institutions. NWCCU's mission is to establish, maintain and promote high standards of educational quality and institutional effectiveness through accreditation and related services. The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities accredits a wide range of institutions, including public and private universities, community colleges and vocational and technical schools. Like other regional accrediting agencies, the NWCCU evaluates institutions based on a set of criteria that focus on academic quality, institutional effectiveness and continuous improvement. Accreditation by the NWCCU is a voluntary process, but it is highly valued by institutions as a mark of academic quality and rigor. Accreditation by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities also makes an institution eligible for federal financial aid programs.
